We arrived at Ella Madya Maha Vidyalaya at around 8.30am. There were about 100 students from several schools. Ella Madya Maha vidyalaya, Heeloya Maha Vidyalaya, Kithal Ella Vidyalaya were among them.
After the welcome speech by Mrs Namalee we started our seminar. First to go was Ujitha who explained CSE OutReach and its motives. Then Chathura went on to the stage to explain what Information Technology is. Then Nadeeshan did his part by teaching the students about Microsoft Office package. At 12.00 we had the lunch break. Explanations by Chamila on digital logic was very successful and the students were actively participating. Hard ware part was covered by Dulanga. We gave out three prizes which were books on O/L IT. One by one we went through our programme but we had to lose some of our eager listeners because of transportation problems. Chameera did the end speech and gave the students food for their thoughts and made them create a dream to achive the best. How ever we went on and concluded our seminar at 2.00pm cutting short some of the presentations.
After the programme we got feedback from the students and teachers and we had many positive thoughts as well as requests to expand CSE OutReach to a series of Seminars rather than an annual one seminar. They were very grateful and promised to help in the future to conduct more seminars.

As we planned earlier, we gathered at one of our colleague’s home and started that day’s journey. Nine of us and Seran, Noolaham foundation chief operating officer, were in that crew. It was around 8.30 a.m when we arrived the school. A typical tamils’ welcome was there for us with lots of smiles from that school society. Then we had a small discussion with vice principal(as principal wasn’t there) and ICT teacher. After a short while we arranged everything to start the seminar. The mean time, little by little , Students were entering the hall. The way they looked at us was really indescribable. They were eager to know what we had for them.

             Vice principal gave a speech at the beginning encouraging us. Sureshkumar started to conduct our seminar introducing the CSE team. For a while he glimpsed on this project saying its objective, mission, vision and current procedures. First session was about Career guidance. It longed around 30 minutes as it had to be done that deep. Basic ideas of computer, History of Computer and operating System slides were analysed deeply by him. Following him, Erlilverl conducted the seminar. He moved through hardware sides of a computer. We brought few materials there to dramatically show the things that they don’t see. He made students to be able to identify all parts in a mother board. Ending that session, we had a 15 minutes break. During this, we gave them milk packets. With refreshments, Second part started. Paranitharan introduced some features regarding networks. Especially the basics of network were the main content of his slides. It moved around 20 minutes. To decorate Parani more, Sanjith took over and continued with internet. He depicted all aspects of social network and general facilities in net. Few websites were suggested for them to get involved in the future. Continuously Brusoth did some aspects of Virus and anti-virus. Finally Seran presented the whole idea about digital library (Noolaham) which helped us to find fund. It was also interesting as it touched their culture to make sure their existence. So entire presentation part concluded with that.
                       Finally their ICT teacher and vice principal expressed their thanks doing brief speeches. Also we got feedbacks from students to make our future seminars easier. We had a tea party with school staffs. They asked us to come in the future as well. Thus, with great satisfaction and proud, we departed from the school at around 2.30 p.m. Briefly, it was a good experience for all of us. Somehow we crossed every hurdle which laid along our way. And this was some boost to finish rest of the seminars. Specially great thanks for Noolaham foundation to withstand all of us and Our department to instruct and encourage us.... More to go...

Nine students from CSE ’10 batch gathered near the front gate of UoM at 4.00am to start their journey to Rasnayakapura. Suneth Vijayindu – the co-chair of the project, Madhushi Bandara – the school coordinator, along with Vidudaya Bandara, Rashmi Woranga, Supun Nakandala, Akila Pemasiri, Pubudu Gunatilaka, Udith Arosha and Meuru Muthuthanthri were the people who had the privilege of conducting the first seminar.

We arrived at Rasnayakapura Navodya Madya Maha Vidyalaya at 8.20am. The principal of the Rasnayakapura Navodya MMV and the divisional IT teaching consultant Mr. Jayasooriya warmly welcomed us to the school. After having tea at the school, we set up the projector and sounds with the help of friendly prefect brothers. Then talking with the divisional IT teaching consultant we came to know that though many schools in the area had computer labs of small scale, the students haven’t realized the value of learning IT or using the facilities provided. Therefore most of the computers remain unused and the school administration had to bear the maintenance cost, even without having a proper usage. So, he requested us to awaken interest on IT among students participating to the seminar.

Due to the transportation problems of students we had to wait until 9.00am to start seminar. Students from Kotawehera had to come past an area with a threat of elephant attacks. They came for the seminar despite such difficulties and we were more than glad to share our knowledge and experience with them.
Nearly 150 students participated from 3 schools. Them being;

• Rasnayakapura Navodya Madya Maha Vidyalaya
• Abukkagama Muslim Maha Vidyalaya
• Kotawehera Madya Maha vidyalaya

The seminar started in the presence of the Principal of Rasnayakapura Navodya MMV, divisional IT teaching consultant and ICT teachers from the said schools. After the welcome speech by the Principal of Rasnayakapura Navodya MMV and the introduction of the program by the divisional IT teaching consultant, the handouts were distributed.

Madhushi and Vidudaya conducted the ‘Introduction to IT’ session which was followed by the ‘Introduction to computer Hardware’ session by Pubudu. Meuru conducted the ice breaking sessions and then Madhushi started the ‘Introduction to Word’ session. After that a 15min break was given for tea.
After the break Akila and Supun conducted the ‘Introduction to PowerPoint’ session which was followed by an ‘Internet’ session by Vijayindu. Udith then did the ‘Introduction to Excel’ session. The last and the most important session, ‘IT Career Guidance’ was done by Rashmi. Finally the Principal and Mr. Jayasooriya thanked us by marking the end of the seminar.
Then we had the lunch at the school and we departed from Rasnayakapura at 2.00pm.

This would not be a success if it weren’t for the support we got from director and assistant director of Divisional Educational Office of Nikaweratiya, Mr.Jayasooriya , the divisional IT teaching consultant, Principle and the friendly staff of Rasnayakapura Navodya M.M.V. and all other teachers of the schools and last but not least, the academic and non-academic staff of CSE UoM and CS&ES.

We finished the first seminar of CSE Outreach with the determination of continuing the project throughout the country sharing IT knowledge and inspiring more and more young minds.
